Quite remarkably Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski is still very much on course to break Gerd Müller’s long-standing Bundesliga scoring record of 40 goals in a single season. As we enter the final stretch of the 2020/21 season, can the Bayern striker really enter the history books?
Following his hattrick on Saturday against Borussia Dortmund in der Klassiker, the Pole needs just nine goals in the final ten games to equal der Bomber’s feat achieved in the 1971/72 Bundesliga campaign. With a current goals per game ratio standing at 1.35, the 32-year-old looks supremely poised to crack the magical 40-goal ceiling.
Bayern travel to face Werder Bremen this coming weekend with Lewandowski looking to continue his rich vein of goalscoring form and surpass Klaus Fischer, who is currently second in the all-time Bundesliga scorer’s list with 268 goals. The Bayern goal machine is currently on 267 having netted 31 times already this season.
Talking to Kicker this week former Schalke, Köln and Bochum legend Fischer believes Lewandowski can achieve the unthinkable. “Lewandowski is currently the most complete striker there is. He scores with his left, his right and his head. He plays in a top team, that has won everything and he’s responsible for the goalscoring.
“The chance is huge. He needs just nine goals in the last ten matches, and the way the season has gone, we have to assume that it is realistic. If he doesn’t do it now, then perhaps he never will. Even Lewandowski isn’t getting younger!”
Following their trip to Bremen, the reigning champions face VfB Stuttgart (home), RB Leipzig (away), Union Berlin (home), VfL Wolfsburg (away), Bayer Leverkusen (home), Mainz (away), Borussia Mönchengladbach (home), Freiburg (away) and finally Augsburg (home) on the final game of the season.
There will sadly still not be any fans in attendance, but that will take away the spectacular achievement should the player actually score the nine (or more!) goals he needs in the remaining ten games.
To many, Gerd Müller’s record was unassailable. It was, until now and Robert Lewandowski has true legendary status within his grasp.
