Why Harry Kane to Bayern Munich is Starting to Make More Sense

Reports emerging this week have increased speculation that Tottenham Hotspur and England striker Harry Kane is a serious transfer target for Bayern Munich. Contact has allegedly been made with his agent by Bayern, who are sending out feelers- which have been positively welcomed.

The sale of Robert Lewandowski to Barcelona in the summer means that Bayern Munich have changed their tack in terms of traditional formation and this season Julian Nagelsmann is doing without a typical number nine striker in the Lewandowski mould. He does however have Sadio Mané, Leroy Sané, Kingslay Coman, Jamal Musiala, Serge Gnabry, Thomas Müller, Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting and Mathys Tel from whom to pick a fluid front three. The Bayern coach is therefore not exactly short on options in his forward line.

However, the club are already planning for the eventuality that they decide a return to a traditional centre forward is necessary and are looking at the best options on the market now. Sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic and Julian Nagelsmann are both said to be huge fans of Kane, who is England’s captain and scorer of 50 international goals (three behind record scorer Wayne Rooney).

Should Tottenham go another season without a trophy, then the 29-year-old striker would start to consider his options. He was linked with a move to Manchester City last summer before they signed Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund. Were Kane to leave White Hart Lane, Spurs would be loathe to sell him to Premier League rival even if there were only one or two who could realistically afford him/ attract him.

Kane’s contract with the North London club runs to end of the 2023-24 season and they will be very mindful that if he is not going to sign a new deal with them, they will want to avoid losing him on a free transfer. Next summer would be the prime opportunity to cash in on their asset while they still can.

Kane it is said is open to the prospect of leaving English shores in pursuit of silverware- something Bayern could pretty much guarantee. Sadio Mané has already shown by leaving Liverpool for the Allianz Arena that the movement of players is not a one-way street.

Sky Sports Germany reporter Florian Plettenburg believes a move is very much more than a pipedream. “I am totally convinced Harry Kane will become a very, very hot topic at Bayern Munich for the next transfer window. It depends on the striker’s performance this year. Bayern bosses have told them ‘Let’s see what happens. We have Mane. We have Coman, Sane, Gnabry and so on’.

“But if they don’t work and they will miss that number nine, then I told you, Bayern Munich is a number nine club. Harry Kane will become very hot. There was definitely contact between the Bayern responsibles and Charlie Kane, the brother of Harry Kane. We hear it confirmed that Harry Kane can really, really imagine joining Bayern.”

Bayern can imagine it. Harry Kane can imagine it. Imagination now just needs turning into reality if that’s the route Bayern want to return to.
