Edin Terzic: A Question of ‘When’ Not ‘If’ Dortmund Will be Champions

Borussia Dortmund coach Edin Terzic wears two hats as the trainer of the Schwarzgelben. One puts him in charge of the team and tactics, while the other puts him firmly in the role of fan metaphorically standing alongside the Südtribune faithful. With both hats however, he is convinced BVB will be Bundesliga champions- he’s just not sure exactly when this will happen.

“You can be sure that there is nothing that we want more than to become German champions” he told Ruhr Nachrichten and Radio 91.2. “I sure we will, but I just don’t know when” he added.

Dortmund have to concern themselves with themselves in the first instant rather than looking at the current mini crisis affecting Bayern Munich as they seek to stop the Bavarians taking yet another league title. “If in the end someone is better, then that’s how it is. If we manage it one day, then it will be all the more beautiful. We will not stop working until one day we can come to the Borsigplatz with you the supporters.”

BVB currently sit second in the table behind Union Berlin with fifteen points (they have a three-point advantage over Bayern) and Terzic is satisfied with the points tally but does see room for improvement.

“We really wanted the 15 points, and we deserved them, although I wasn’t satisfied with the performances at the beginning. The focus is on stabilizing the defence because last season we often had to score two or three goals to win games.

“Of course, there is still a need for optimization. I relate that to working with the squad I have. I see an increase in many processes, and I see a development in the guys who are here.”

The Borussia Dortmund squad certainly has the quality to mount a title challenge and even with their current injury woes, they are still withing touching distance of the top. The question of ‘if’ BVB can be champions will come down to the age-old issue of consistency and mentality- two factors that have plagued the Schwarzgelben in recent seasons.

Can Terzic deliver on his prophesy of a Meisterschale for Dortmund? “I signed the contract as the next ex-trainer of BVB” he explained. “But I will try in the time between signing and this point to use the opportunity and throw everything into it.”
