Women’s Champions League Matchday 1 Roundup

Ahead of their key Bundesliga clash this weekend both VfL Wolfsburg and Bayern Munich got their Champions League campaigns off to winning starts this week.

Bayern Munich 2-1 Rosengard

Having come through their qualifier against Real Sociedad, Bayern were the favourites against Swedish side Rosengard in their group D opener but had to come from behind to claim the win. The visitors went into the lead after 25 minutes with Loreta Kullashi heading in following a corner.

Bayern were level ten minutes later with left back Carolin Simon switching to the right side before firing in. They were then in front on 57 minutes when Linda Dallmann reacted quickest inside the penalty area. Bayern had dominated but found it hard to break down an organised and packed Rosengard defence.

The other game in the group saw Barcelona thrash Benfica 9-0 and the Bavarians travel to Portugal to face the Lisbon side.

VfL Wolfsburg 4-0 St. Pölten

The Bundesliga champions made light work of their Austrian opponents in this group B opener. They were 2-0 up inside the first fifteen minutes with a brace from Ewa Pajor. Despite chances to extend their lead in the first period, it wasn’t until the 57th minute that Lena Lattwein made it three being in the right place at the right time to capitalise on a loose ball.

The home side added a fourth in the 89th minute with a long-range Jill Roord goal. The other tie in the group saw Roma beat Slavia Prague 1-0 in Italy. Wolfsburg will face the Czech team next week after their weekend top of the table match against Bayern.
