German Reaction to Peru Friendly Win

Following their comfortable 2-0 win over Peru in Mainz, Bundestrainer Hansi Flick declared himself pleases with the performance and is already looking forward to continuing the rebuild of the Nationalmannschaft. Here’s all the reactions from the Mewa Arena.

Hansi Flick:

“It’s good that we won 2-0. Our goal was to keep the clean sheet. But we also know that we haven’t done everything 100 percent right and that there is still room for improvement. But the team had a good grip for 90 minutes and showed a lot of passion and dynamism. Those were things we wanted to see.

“Both central defenders played flawlessly. But both full backs also had a lot of dynamism. The back four acted very well. Everyone saw that he [Marius Wolf] created a lot of momentum on his side. Just like the second goal. That was played out excellently. His cross came right between the defence and the goalkeeper. That’s the way it has to be. He did his job very well.

“Of course, Belgium are a different calibre. We’re happy to play against such an opponent. Maybe there will be one or two changes. But we want to keep the basic structure.”

Joshua Kimmich:

“We started the game well and had chances for more goals. The second half was disjointed. We have to make fewer mistakes and control the whole game. It’s great when our strikers score. Having people in the box really helped us today.”

Niclas Füllkrug:

“Our aim tonight was to start the year well. I get plenty of chances in the box. It’s great that I’m so involved in our play.”

Leon Goretzka:

“We got the win and a clean sheet too. We’re far from being perfect still. We wanted to start building some momentum and we did that. We scored two nice goals and Niclas Füllkrug showed that he’s still capable of finding the back of the net for Germany.”

Nico Schlotterbeck:

“We played well. We could have scored two or three more goals though, and that would have made it an even better evening.”
