Supercup reaction: Tuchel shocked, Rose boosted

An inspired hattrick from Dani Olmo handed RB Leipzig a deserved 3-0 win over Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena to take the Supercup in the Bundesliga curtain-raiser. The euphoria surrounding Harry Kane’s transfer was quickly dampened as the Saxon cup holders went into a 2-0 half-time lead. Bayern were not at their sharpest going forward and a second half penalty from Olmo sealed a second successive win against the Rekordmeister at the Allianz Arena. Here are the reactions from coaches and players following last night’s game…

Bayern Munich

Thomas Tuchel: “It’s frightening. I don’t have a solution now, I’m shocked and extremely disappointed. I don’t recognize anything anymore, neither what we did in terms of content nor how we last played and trained. I expect to find hundreds of errors in the analysis.

“We are disappointed. We created chances in the first half and conceded easy goals at the other end. The discrepancy between the form, the mood and what we get on the pitch is big. The willingness, enthusiasm, form and condition we played in the friendlies has nothing to do with how we played today.”

Matthijs de Ligt : “We weren’t good in the game from the first minute, we allowed a lot of chances and didn’t take advantage of our chances. We performed well in the friendlies against Monaco and Liverpool. We weren’t good today and it will be difficult against a team like Leipzig. We have to stay together, keep working hard every day and improve on the things we didn’t do well.”

Sven Ulreich: “We all imagined the game a little differently. We didn’t get into the game well, we lacked greed and tackling strength from the start. Leipzig did Leipzig things. They didn’t have much of the game, but they countered and became dangerous with every attack. That must not happen to us. We had chances and we have to catch up straight after the break. Then we get a stupid penalty and then it’s very difficult, of course.

“We have to keep working now, shake that off. There are games like that. We have to look ahead. Starting tomorrow, our focus will be on Bremen, where we want to keep the first three points of the season.”

RB Leipzig

Marco Rose: “Dani Olmo is an outstanding footballer. It was a great performance by him and by the whole team too. The way he took the second goal was fantastic. The thing that impresses me even more though is how he drives the team on and helps the younger players.

“We won 3-0 and scored some nice goals. On top of that, we kept a clean sheet. The team worked extremely hard and we had a solid goalkeeper in Janis Blaswich too. There were one or two nervy moments, but this game should give us a boost for the future, even if we know we can do some things better.

“You can’t keep Bayern quiet with all their quality for the full 90 minutes. We obviously sat back a bit at times, but we were clever from our counter-attacks. We’ve started well against a good team today and we face another strong side next week in Leverkusen.”

Dani Olmo: “That was an incredible performance from the team. We ran a lot and made a lot of good decisions. There is no better way to start the season than with a win in Munich.

“I’m definitely taking the match ball home with me, it will be a nice memento. We have a young team with lots of potential and want to attack the league head on. We’ll have to see what we can achieve if we consistently perform well.”

Willi Orban: “This win feels brilliant, we had to work really hard for it. We had a bit of luck at times, but I think we played really well and deserved to win.

“We lost the ball too easily on a number of occasions in the first half. We were a bit sloppy, but improved on that after the break.”

Max Eberl: “We came into this game somewhat blind. We have come from a long pre-season and you never really know where you stand. Bayern were able to announce a huge transfer today, but we didn’t let that unsettle us. I think we deserved to win the game.

“We always want to win, regardless of where we are playing. We did really well tonight and as I already said, we deserved to win.

“The new signings performed really well. Playing in a new team and a new country is a challenge. It has to be said that the old players have made life really easy for the new lads, we noticed that already during the training camp. The mood was good and they have settled in quickly.”
