Bundesliga Fanatic March Player and Goal of the Month Awards

As we emerge from Winter and enter Spring and the closing stage of the season, it is time to nominate the Bundesliga’s best player and best goal from the month of March. As usual there were plenty of candidates and the task of whittling them down was a tough one. So, who caught the eye the most in March?

Player of the Month: Raphaël Guerreiro (Borussia Dortmund)

Unleashed by Edin Terzic from his fullback role and pushed into a midfield role, the Portuguese produced two fantastic displays against Schalke and Köln to earn this month’s Player of the Month award.

The 2-2 draw in the Revierderby on matchday 24 saw Guerreiro shine with a goal and an assist in his new role. Matchday 25 saw him once again take the headlines in BVB’s 6-1 demolition of Köln. He scored the opener and then provided assists to put the hosts 3-0 ahead. His technical ability, freed from defensive responsibility, shone through and the Schwarzgelben will want to offer him a new contact soon with the promise of this new role on a permanent basis.

Against Köln he covered more distance than anyone else and had a pass accuracy of 83%.

Honourable mentions:

Emre Can and Marco Reus from Dortmund also had an impressive month as did Erhan Masovic of Bochum and Marius Bülter of Schalke from the other end of the Bundesliga table.

Goal of the Month: Benjamin Pavard (vs Augsburg MD24)

March had plenty of goals of merit and trawling through them to decide the best was a most enjoyable chore. In the end Bayern Munich fullback Benjamin Pavard’s second goal against FC Augsburg won the day. The Frenchman doesn’t seem to score ordinary goals and his effort to put the Rekordmeister 3-1 up was another gem.

A corner from the right saw Mathijs de Ligt’s header partially cleared by Beljo only for Pavard to acrobatically volley home from a tight angle in classic Pavard style.

Honourable mentions:

Both the goals from Dortmund in the Revierderby from Nico Schlotterbeck and Raphaël Guerreiro were worthy of note as was Amin Adli’s strike for Leverkusen against Hertha on matchday 23. Mitchell Bakker slammed in a nice effort against Bremen, while the Grün-Weißen’s Marvin Ducksch also scored a beauty against Borussia Mönchengladbach (his second). Ludovic Ajorque’s goal versus Hertha also found itself in contention.
