DFB Pokal first round: The road to Berlin starts here

Just two a week before the Bundesliga season gets underway, we have the first round of the DFB Pokal this weekend with RB Leipzig looking to defend the crown they won against Eintracht Frankfurt last season. With the Bundesliga giants all being given away ties, this is where the minnows get the chance to cause a real upset before the league season gets underway.

Last season it was SV Elversberg, who performed a giant-killing over Bayer Leverkusen. Who could be the headline makers this time around?

Holders RB Leipzig start with a trip to Wehen Wiesbaden in September due their Super Cup clash with Bayern. The newly promoted 2.Bundesliga side overcame Arminia Bielefeld  in the promotion/ relegation play-off and will be looking to get their season off to the ideal start by dumping the holders out at the first round stage.

Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich will travel to Regionalliga-West winners Preußen Münster looking to put the travails of last season behind them. Bayern do however have bad memories of embarrassing first round exits with Wienheim in 1991 and TSV Vestenbergsgreuth in 1994. Runners-up Borussia Dortmund face side TSV Schott Mainz, who have recently celebrated promotion to the Regionalliga Südwest from the Oberliga Rheinland-Pfalz/Saar.

Makkabi Berlin, who are appearing in the DFB Pokal for the first time face VfL Wolfsburg, while Regionalliga sides TSG Balingen and SV Oberachern face Bundesliga sides in VfB Stuttgart and Freiburg respectively.

The recent beaten finalists Eintracht Frankfurt travel east to take on Lokomotiv Leipzig having lost to the Rasen Ballsport variety in the final. TuS Bersenbrück from the Oberliga Niedersachsen have drawn Borussia Mönchengladbach, while Champions League qualifiers Union Berlin have been pitted against Astoria Walldorf who won the Landespokal Baden against Pforzheim.
