Bundesliga Fanatic August Player and Goal of the Month

We may have only seen two matchdays in August, but that doesn’t mean we won’t dish out a player and goal of the month award. So just who has impressed in the opening two weeks of the new season and won the first gongs?

Player of the Month: Jonas Wind (VfL Wolfsburg)

The Wölfe’s Danish striker only scored six Bundesliga goals in the whole of last season, but the fact that he already has four in two matches this time around is testament to the fantastic start he has enjoyed to the new campaign.

His two goals against Heidenheim were both poacher’s goals inside the six-yard box, while his brace versus Köln saw him using his ‘Torinstinkt’ inside the 18-yard box to help Wolfsburg to three points after earlier going behind.

Coach Niko Kovac has referred to him as the league’s number one striker. “He’s the number one striker for us at the moment and probably in the league too. He’s hitting everything right now and he’s in a really good mood. You could see that in the preparation. He’s physically fit, very motivated and a leader.”

Honourable mentions:

Granit Xhaka has made a great start in his return to the Bundesliga, while Dani Olmo and Xavi Simons have shone at Leipzig. Kevin Behrens has four goals like Jonas Wind and at Bayern Harry Kane, Leroy Sané and Alphonso Davies have all started in top form.

Goal of the month: Kevin Stöger (VfL Bochum)

We’ve already witnessed 65 goals in the first two matchday’s of the new season, but we’ve gone for Bochum midfielder Kevin Stöger’s effort as the best of the lot.

When Manuel Riemann’s pinpoint diagonal long pass down the left found Maximilian Wittek, there appeared to be little danger as the ball fell to Stöger on the far left-hand edge of the penalty area. The 30-year-old however unleashed a rocket from his left boot, which fizzed into the far side of the net before Gregor Kobel could properly react to the shot.  When they are hit that perfectly, it is a laser-guided missile.

Honourable mentions:

Heidenheim’s first-ever goal at the Voith Arena was a free-kick stunner from Jan-Niklas Beste, while Elvis Rexhbecaj’s goal against Gladbach came from the same rocket playbook as Kevin Stöger’s.
