Women’s Champions League Matchday 2 Roundup

Wolfsburg and Bayern both maintained their winning starts to their Champions League campaigns, although for Bayern they left it late (very late) in Portugal to claim three points.

Slavia Prague 0-2 VfL Wolfsburg

After winning their opening Champions League fixture and then beating title rivals Bayern Munich at the weekend Wolfsburg notched up fairly comfortable win in Prague. The visitors started quickly with three chances in the first few minutes. They duly opened the scoring in the 11th minute through Jule Brand.

They created numerous other chances including hitting the post on 14 minutes, but it wasn’t until the 76th minute that Ewa Pajor added the second. Wolfsburg have now won eight our of eight across all competitions this season and face a trip to Italy in November to face a Roma side also with two wins so far.

Benfica 2-3 Bayern Munich

Bayern Frauen had to come from 2-0 down to finally beat Benfica in Lisbon and left it very late to secure the win. Nycole Raysla scored just before half time for the hosts with Canadian striker Cloé Lacasse adding a second on the hour mark. The German side pulled one back via right back Maximiliane Rall before achieving parity on 83 minutes through their English import Georgia Stanway.

Bayern goalkeeper Maria Luisa Grohs had been at fault for the second Benfica goal but made amends by saving Ana Vitoria’s penalty in the 89th minute to deny the Portuguese the win. Due to extensive stoppage time Stanway had time to fire in a 98th minute goal to actually give Bayern the victory.
